Hope Unexpected

Hope Unexpected nurtures, empowers, and equips single mothers by demonstrating the love of Jesus Christ.

Our mission is achieved by showing mercy, love, and grace through hospitality and support by offering multiple programs to serve our clients. Our goal is to bridge the gap and provide the resources needed to make success and self-sufficiency possible.

Whether a single mom comes to us already knowing Jesus as her Savior or is exploring Christianity for the first time, we are committed to being here for her. We will walk alongside her in her parenting journey, supporting her no matter where she is in her faith walk.

Our Story

Hope Unexpected began in 2012 with a simple prayer and a faithful “yes.”

Susan Lickley, our Executive Director, first learned about a group in Byron Center seeking to support young women navigating unplanned pregnancies. As she prayed about stepping into this space, she asked God for clarity – whether this was truly the path He was calling her to and whether she was qualified for the work ahead.

God’s answer was clear and unmistakable: “I will provide, and I will equip you.”

From that moment forward, doors began to open. God placed the right people, resources, and relationships into position. Susan began reaching out to local churches and high schools to find women seeking support.

What started as a step of obedience slowly grew into a community.

Today, Hope Unexpected continues to grow through faith, prayer, and the unwavering belief that when God calls, He also equips.
